Why Try Acupuncture to Quit Smoking?

Quit Smoking

If you are trying to stop smoking acupuncture may be another tool to add to your army kit bag in order to fight the urge to light one up. It is becoming an increasingly popular choice to help people stop this deadly habit. This article aims to explain why it began to be used in smoking cessation and common styles of practice. This can help you understand why you might want to include it within your efforts to stub out the cigarettes for good.

Early Work

Acupuncture and addiction isn't just a new fad in the last few years, it has been documented for close to forty years now. Pioneering practitioners in Hong Kong noticed an accidental side effect when using it for pain relief following operations was that their opium-addicted patients experienced relief from drug withdrawal syndromes (1). Acupuncturists quickly took up this idea and developed protocols for working with many drug addictions (2). The techniques have also been increasingly used for people trying to stop smoking as they are universal, not specific to the drug involved (3). So from early work in the 1970s acupuncture has taken a place in the addiction field and some distinct practice styles have evolved along with that work.

Ear acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine body acupuncture

Practitioners in both Europe and China has been studying and refining acupuncture techniques involving needling only the outer parts of the ears since the 1950s. Ear acupuncturists today typically include addictions including smoking in their repertoire of commonly addressed conditions. Traditional Chinese Medicine acupuncturist's needle acupuncture points throughout the whole body, although they too may choose to use the ears in smoking cessation practice. For the consumer today, there is a choice of these two styles easily available in most cities.

Basic Mechanisms

Modern commentators and studies indicate that acupuncture triggers the release of powerful, endorphins, naturally occurring chemicals which encourage relaxation. Traditional Chinese Medicine theory holds that long term smoking disorders the body's vital energy, the Qi. By using acupuncture or ear acupuncture to bring the body back close to the correct harmony, the body has a chance to heal and the mind feel more at ease. Whichever theories are more acceptable for you, you may want to try a course of acupuncture to see if it can help you as part of a range of smoking cessation activities.

Smoking is a habit that indisputably kills and maims an incredible number of people every year. It's also an addiction which many people find it initially difficult to get a hold of. Its history of working with addictions, ease of availability today and purported calming effects might encourage people quitting smoking to considering investing in a course of acupuncture or ear acupuncture.

Quit Smoking Hypnosis - A Simple DIY Smoking Hypnosis Technique to Help You Stop Smoking Fast

Quit Smoking

Quit smoking hypnosis has effectively helped many people to stop smoking. However, getting professional help from a good hypnotherapist is not only expensive, you may have to wait quite a while before you can get an appointment. Hypnosis CDs can be a reasonable alternative, but like hypnotherapists, the good ones are expensive and there are many lousy ones that just waste your time and money. Sometimes, if you want something done right, you need to do it yourself. Here is a method of self hypnosis that you can do on your own, where you can effectively verify the results of each step.

This quit smoking hypnosis technique is easy to perform and works fast. You do not need to have a strong imagination. This is important, because many common self hypnosis techniques need good imagination to work well. That is why many people say they have tried hypnosis and failed - because they do not have the level of imagination needed to make it work for them. For that matter, neither do I. Which is why I try to use props for my own self-help hypnosis.

There are only two props needed for this smoking hypnosis method: your cigarettes and some food you do not like, for example chili or celery. The aim is to hypnotically anchor the act of smoking cigarettes to the taste eating something extremely disagreeable and unpleasant to yourself. That means every time you pull out a cigarette to light it up, you will taste an unpleasant sensation in your mouth (the taste of hot spicy chili burning your tongue) and be reminded that you want to quit smoking. This can be an exceptionally helpful reminder for those who quit cold turkey. It is also a strong discouragement for those times you feel really tempted to smoke, and you can increase the effectiveness even more by carefully using nicotine patches or chewing gum to help you handle your nicotine withdrawal symptoms.

Here are the simple steps needed to create this hypnotic anchor:

  • Find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed.
  • Induce a light hypnotic trance by counting backwards from 100 to 1. Do this as many times as needed until you feel calm and relaxed. There are other ways to put yourself under a light hypnotic trance, but this is the easiest way for most people.
  • Once you are very calm and relaxed, pull out your cigarette as usual. However, instead of lighting it up, put the chili in your mouth and bite down on it. At this stage, most people will leave the hypnotic trance.
  • Repeat at least once everyday at the same time until biting down on the chili does not end your feeling of relaxation. This means the anchor is finally in place.
  • Once your anchor is in place, remember to renew it at least once a week initially, and eventually once a month.

And that is all there is to this simple, proven quit smoking hypnosis technique. Every step is simple and verifiable. It uses a light hypnotic trance so that your subconscious mind makes the anchor quickly and easily while letting you remain in control. It uses props so even the most unimaginative and stolid accountant or engineer can make it work for themselves. You also do not have to worry about some crooked hypnotist mucking about inside your mind doing who knows what.
